Day Two: On Track

News update, all the anxiety I had before didn't happen as I walked into the school building. I went right to Mrs. Johns class. I came in the middle of class changes so her door was locked. I waited patiently outside for her. One student came up to me and started a conversation. I was caught off guard. He began asking me if I really like the University I attended. I told him that going to the University of Georgia was so rewarding, and if he put his mind to it, he could go there also. After a short conversation, the student went into his classroom.

Mrs. Johns finally came up from hall duty and unlocked her room. Students began entering the room and the teacher instructed them to sit down at the desks. She told the class, "Mrs. Mimi has created a short powerpoint presentation for us to show you'll about graduation". As she was going through the presentation I noticed it was talking about SAT, ACT, possible colleges, career options and more. I was really impressed how most of the students became so engulfed with the information Mrs. Johns was talking about. Some of the students began asking the volunteers in the room basic questions about the SAT and ACT. I told them basic facts from what I remember about taking the SAT. Mrs. Mimi made a short visit to the call to inspire the kids about how important going to college is, and the importance of graduation from Classic City.

After the presentation, the students loaded up their computers and got to work. I told myself last tine that I was going to be more influential with the students to show them I cared about them. Mrs. Jones linked me with a girl who needed help. However, she wasn't working on an English assignment. She told me that it was for a business economics class. At first, I was nervous because I haven't taken an economics class since my senior year of high school However, I wasn't going to let this stop me from helping. She had to create a business and talk about how it was going to run in short paragraphs. I was able to help her articulate the correct way to write, however, I needed to look up terms on the business aspect of the assignment. Needless to say, we got the assignment done before the class period ended. During my time working with her, she told me that she can't wait to be graduated from Classic City. I gave positive reinforcement to her saying that as long as she stayed focus, she can make that happen! She also asked me if I enjoyed college., I told her that it was one of the most rewarding things I've ever done and I wouldn't change it for anything. She proceeded to tell me that she also wanted to go to college, and if she did she would be the first within her immediate family. I was so impressed that she was open to talking to me about her educational career, and I was truly inspired. I can't wait for the next time I go to volunteer so I can check up on her achievements so far.
