Day Five: Help!

It has been a while since I have been to volunteer. I got caught up with finals, spring break, and being sick. Therefore, I've got to make up my hours by staying longer hours within the class. Today I went into volunteer and there were hardly any kids present. Today is St. Patricks Day. I only counter 8 students in class which was shocking. Anyway, the third period class I usually help with really dragged on. None of the students I usually worked with were present. Which meant I wasn't expecting anyone to need my help. There were three UGA student tutors there to help. We really got a chance to talk to Mrs. Johns about the school, her career as a teacher, and how the school is different than regular school. I feel like she had a lot in insight on what its like to be a teacher which made me excited for student teaching in the fall. She told us about her experiences as a middle school teacher. Third period ended and I decided to stay through 4th period. I've stayed over into 4th period once or twice. I saw some similar faces stroll into the room. I began to get excited hoping that a student would need my help. Shortly into the 4th period a student turned to me and asked for my help. He was working on an assessment for language arts. It was a test with basic reading and comprehension questions. There were also poetry, grammar, and sentence structure questions. I never liked the feeling of a teacher or tutor hovering over me while I was in school. So, I tried to sit back and wait for the student to ask me a question. When he submitted the test Mrs. Johns said his grade improved drastically. This made me feel great when I saw a smile grow across the students face. I know how important it is for them to do well on the online classes, and I love that they are open for our help. So far, my time at Classic City has gone very well. I feel like the students are more open with me since I've spent more time with them. And every time I am challenged to think as the teacher and not the student. This is something Ive never encountered before and so far I love it.
